Why Ventilate?
Ventilation systems are required for offices where there are no opening windows or where there are other factors which make forced fresh air supply and/or extract desirable.
Fresh air can be supplied to all areas, thus improving air quality for staff; this is a legal requirement for offices without opening windows. Fresh air supply can incorporate a heat recovery heat exchanger, this recovers a high percentage of energy from previously cooled or heated air, and ensures both the introduction of fresh air and the removal of stale air. Roof mounted air handling units with heating and cooling facility can be incorporated for full fresh air systems. This will control both the temperature and humidity of incoming air.
Capital Allowance Scheme
Many of the latest air conditioning systems will qualify for enhanced capital allowances. Enhanced capital allowances are a system designed to offer companies the benefit of writing off the cost of capital expenditure in year one, rather than over a period of years.
This will not only be for the cost of the equipment, but also the labour, installation materials and direct costs associated with the installation (such as electrical work directly attributable to the air conditioning installation). There are qualifying criteria designed to encourage the purchase of energy efficient products. This is a complex subject and will require the services of an accountant.

Maintenance Service
It is important to ensure that installed equipment is kept in good working condition by having routine maintenance carried out. This will help to avoid the cost and inconvenience of unexpected malfunctions and ensure that energy consumption is kept to a minimum. From July 4th 2007, EU legislation comes into effect deeming all permanent air conditioning installations subject to regular refrigerant leakage checks. The frequency of these checks is based solely on the amount of refrigerant in the system; feel free to contact the cfes team if you require any assistance in meeting the legal requirements.
